With greater PTSD awareness, greater tragedies can be prevented.
ORLANDO, FL, June 28, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As the end of June draws near, it's important to remind the public that June is PTSD Awareness Month. PTSD is a huge problem in the United States. Around seven to eight percent of the population develops PTSD at a certain point in their lives. To add to that, there are over 8 million adults that deal with PTSD every single year.
Despite these shocking statistics, very few people seek treatment.
There are numerous reasons why people do not seek treatment. People do not recognize the symptoms of PTSD or think the symptoms they are experiencing will pass with time. Education about PTSD is also uncommon, making it difficult for family members and friends to help sufferers. Even many medical professionals are not trained to look for this mental condition in their patients.
These are just a few of the reasons why it's important to bring up the fact that June is PTSD Awareness Month. Awareness is the first step in getting proper treatment for yourself or your loved ones. While PTSD is often associated with veterans and victims of violent events, the condition can affect anyone that has gone through a traumatic experience.
PTSD is not a condition that should be ignored or minimized as it can lead to serious issues. PTSD has a strong relationship with depression, substance abuse, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and even OCD. It's also very important to mention that there are strong links between PTSD and suicide. Ignoring the problem only makes it worse.
Some surprising facts about PTSD:
- Around 10 percent of women develop PTSD at some point in their lives
- 27 percent of people who have been diagnosed with PTSD have attempted suicide
- 70 percent of adults go through a traumatic event which can lead to PTSD
With greater PTSD awareness, greater tragedies can be prevented. More serious mental health conditions can also be averted. It's important for sufferers and loved ones to recognize that there's hope. PTSD treatments like cognitive processing therapy, eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, and even medication have proven to be effective.
So as we approach the end of June, it's important to spread the word about PTSD awareness.
