Renovating a house is a minefield of obstacles littered with difficult decisions. There will be delays, budgets will run over, and even a single room renovation will probably leave you with some sleepless nights. In the end, though, when you're surveying your beautiful, personalised, creation, it will be worth it.
True, buying a wreck of a house means that you can get more space and a better location for your money, but it also means that you are going to have to turn your hand to project management, material sourcing, price negotiation, and you will probably have to develop extensive DIY skills along the way. Having access to professionals, willing to offer guidance and advice, is priceless, and it really could prevent expensive delays.
The Grand Designs Live Expo is the perfect opportunity for you to connect with professionals experienced in all areas of property renovation. You can also use the opportunity to source high quality supplies on the cheap – you don't want to miss that kind of opportunity.

About Grand Designs
Grand Designs first aired in April 1999. More than 200 episodes have aired over 20 series, and every episode has been presented by Kevin McCloud. Each episode follows an individual or family on their home build project. Most of the plans are elaborate and extensive, many of them with unique features, and one of the reasons for the show's popularity is that it doesn't sugar coat the process. Viewers experience the ups and downs, highs and lows, of building a property from scratch. True to life, most projects featured on the show run over budget and complete later than initially planned. It's rare for a project of this scale to run completely smoothly, and this is accurately represented by Kevin McCloud and the team.
The properties that feature in the show are incredibly diverse. Viewers can see water towers and lighthouses being converted to residential property. They can see eco-homes being built from the ground up, or modern prefab buildings being constructed in less than a week. The series rarely features standard builds, and there is always some unique feature of the property, because this is one of the primary benefits offered by planning and building your own home from scratch.
The popularity of the show has seen it extended over 20 series, and there have been a number of spin offs and brand expansions in its 20-year history. Grand Designs Revisited sees Kevin visit properties that were not completed in the original show, discovering whether they were eventually completed and often showing Kevin spending the night in the property to get true first-hand experience of the build. The show has also spread around the world, with Australian and New Zealand based spin off shows.
In 2015, the show's production team won the Best Features award at the BAFTA TV Awards, having been nominated 5 times at previous BAFTA TV ceremonies.
Kevin McCloud
At the time of the first show, McCloud was a relative unknown in the TV world. His debut TV appearance came as a guest presenter on Homefront. His success in this role led to McCloud being named the presenter of Grand Designs, which aired in 1999. He is popular for his sceptical approach to the process, as well as his jovial demeanour, and he will once again be presenting this year's Grand Designs Live exhibition.
Grand Designs Live
The Grand Designs Live exhibition started in 2008 and takes place in Birmingham and London biannually. The first event was so popular, attracting more than 100,000 visitors, that it has continued ever since. Channel 4 broadcasts two TV shows to accompany the exhibition, which are screened Live from the show. You could be featured on the Grand Designs Live or Grand Designs Live: Today shows, if you're that way inclined.
Exhibitions And Talks
There will be more than 400 exhibitors at the show, offering everything from architectural drawing to raw materials and professional renovation services. You can also head to the Grand Theatre to hear Kevin himself talk, as well as experts from various industries and from within the construction industry.
You can hear Kevin talking to MP Richard Bacon. The two will be discussing diversity in the construction industry, and especially in the self and custom housing markets. If that isn't your thing, you will also be able to listen to discussions about whether you need to work with an architect on your project, and numerous talks on sustainable building.
Sustainability is one area where the Grand Designs show really concentrates, and one of the reasons that a lot of grand designers choose to build their own home rather than buy an existing one. As such, you will also find a lot of exhibitors and experts talking about sustainability and its role in today's home. You can even get some tips from Karen Stylianides, Editor of Grand Designs Magazine and Guilleaume Vaillant from H&M Home.
An Opportunity To Ask The Experts
If you need specific help with a problem you're experiencing with your renovation, there are 30 minute Ask An Expert consultations with Grand Design experts available, too. Specialists include RIBA architects, designers, gardeners, and financial and planning experts. Whatever obstacle you've come up against, you will be able to find somebody to help answer your questions and ensure a successful build.
Be Inspired, Under The Stairs
At this year's event, there is also the Under The Stairs Project. This is a design competition that invites professional designers to create their own unique space for the area of the house that is the most often underused area.
The space under the stairs is often left empty, used as junk storage, or occasionally turned into a downstairs loo, but despite its quirky shape and challenging dimensions, there is so much more that could be done with the space. Designers are invited to use their own products, which are currently in stock, in order to create a beautiful and inspiring area for the home: ideal for those that know there is so much more that can be done under the stairs.
More From The Expo
The event is a five-day exhibition, and visitors are encouraged to spend the day looking around and gleaning as much information as possible from the bank of experts that attend. As well as the exhibitors and companies appearing, there will also be opportunity to grab some food and something to drink. With a Premium Ticket, guests not only get fast entry to the show and a reusable tote bag, which will be great for carrying brochures and free samples around, you will also enjoy a complimentary glass of prosecco and a slice of cake.
