"When these two boys came into our world, we fell in love with them, and we were able to envision a life we could give them and have together."
DALLAS, TX, December 24, 2020 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The year 2020 might be described as one of the most tumultuous in recent memory, but it is not without its triumphs and successes. Access Physicians, a Dallas-based firm focused on delivering specialty services such as neurology and cardiology to hospitals via telemedicine, prioritizes compassion and collaboration to advance the effectiveness of its technology and improve care for patients. When one of their hospitalist team members learned that two newborns would be handed over to Texas Child Protective Services if they could not find a home, he and his spouse moved quickly.
Ryan Disotell, 39, an Access Physicians nurse practitioner at a hospital in Sulphur Springs, and his husband, Justin Woodson, 38, longed to become parents for years. After serving as foster parents several times, the two also attempted parenthood through a surrogate, but their dreams of becoming parents seemed to be out of reach each time.
"In a health care setting, obviously, you see pain, suffering, and needs every day, and some of them break your heart," Disotell said. "When these two boys came into our world, we fell in love with them, and we were able to envision a life we could give them and have together."
Within days, the mother and case worker filed the paperwork to give the couple guardianship of two newborn boys, Cooper and Carter – born three minutes apart.
To advance Access Physicians' mission to bring clinical excellence to telemedicine, the organization looks for clinicians and specialists who are attuned to patient needs whether they are obvious health issues or intrinsic attributes displaying themselves in less obvious ways. Learning how and when to spot those opportunities to advance care becomes second nature and a significant tool to help make telemedicine impactful for patients and their hospitals.
"As clinicians, we are introduced to patients and families each day, each with their own stories and needs," said Chris Gallagher, M.D., chief executive officer and co-founder of Access Physicians. "Sometimes they are at the crossroads of the hardest and most painful times of their lives. By nature of these interactions, we end up becoming a part of the culture of the facilities and communities where we practice."
Officially, Disotell and his husband, will become proud parents of Cooper and Carter on Jan. 7 in a court hearing via video conference, capping the end of this part of a parenting experience that started during a global pandemic on June 21 – Father's Day 2020.
