Change rocked your world in 2020 — here's how to power through, into a brave, new 2021.
PORTLAND, OR, February 02, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Few of us have escaped the bumps and bruises — or worse — of the cataclysmic changes this past year, but some of us have weathered the pandemic, the politics, and the protests better than others.
How? One word. Resilience.
Dr. Sarah Stebbins, who has worked as a Change Management Consultant for more than 25 years, found the answer to navigating critical life changes during her rafting experience in the raging rapids of the Colorado River. Dr. Stebbins drew from nature the key elements that can crush the paralyzing fear that often comes with the changes in our lives.
These six elements — which add up to Resilience — are spelled out by the word CHANGE:
• C is for Candor: Self-honesty is a key piece of personal resiliency.
• H is for Heroism: We can all be heroes, when our actions are right and just.
• A is for Acceptance: Change is inevitable. We absolutely cannot escape it.
• N is for Nurture: Commit to taking the time to create and pursue nurturing activities.
• G is for Gratitude: Gratitude gifts us with a different perspective so we can explore different ways of moving forward.
• E is for Engagement: When we show up, committed with head and heart, we build resiliency.
"Resilience is about building muscle," Dr. Stebbins says, adding that when we learn how to get through a particular change, we store that in our resilience muscle. "Over time, with practice, we accrue what I call resilience wisdom, and it's that wisdom that we tap into as life throws new challenges our way."
Ironically, despite devoting most of her professional life to coaching and consulting organizations and clients through change, it was the real-life experience of a wid rafting trip on the Colorado River that inspired her book "From Fire to Water: Moving Through Change: Six Elements for Personal Resiliency."
"I quickly discovered that navigating changes I went through were not unlike navigating the Colorado River. The river can be unpredictable and shocking. It can be placid one moment and, in an instant, indiscriminately blast you with its water-laden fury. And so it is with any change!"
Stebbins notes the trauma so many are experiencing, and she says developing your resiliency wisdom is the answer. "This is both a mind-set and a lifelong journey. Think of resilience as a mental and emotional muscle that needs exercising."
