For the $1,000 scholarship, Abena submitted a 500-word essay about how she raised awareness for alcohol addiction at her school and how she intends to use her experiences in her future career. About the Randall Blair Isenberg Alcohol Addiction Awareness Scholarship

During his career as a former prosecutor and state district judge, founding attorney Randall B. Isenberg saw firsthand how addiction affected people's lives, such as being convicted of alcohol-related criminal charges, driving while intoxicated (DWI), and having to deal with its consequences (e.g., jail time, drug rehabilitation, and even accepting fatalities they may have caused).

The Law Offices of Randall B. Isenberg created its scholarship program to award individuals who strive to bring more awareness to how alcohol addiction affects our community. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:

- Be an enrolled or admitted student at a U.S. college, university, or graduate school
- Have at least a 3.0 GPA
- Have a history of raising alcohol addiction awareness, whether through volunteer work or educational/professional experiences

The scholarship application process closed in June 2022, and the winner was notified in August 2022.

About the Scholarship Winner, Abena Boateng

Abena Boateng is a current student at the University of Texas at Austin, where she is pursuing an undergraduate degree as a Public Health major and specializing in Biostatistics.

"This scholarship is truly an investment in my future. It will take off some financial burdens by allowing me more time to focus on school rather than working. I believe that education is an investment in the future, and it will allow me to propel my future in the right direction," Abena told the firm after being asked how the scholarship would impact her life and college career.

Abena's Essay Focuses on Her Volunteer Work

In her essay, Abena described her volunteer work at UT SHIFT, a university initiative program that aims to engage students, staff, and the Austin community in a conversation about alcohol addiction. Abena wrote about an event where her volunteer group made nonalcoholic drinks to teach students how to socialize without becoming intoxicated.

Abena also participates in other university programs, such as the Black Health Professionals Organization and the African Student Organization. She intends to enroll in medical school after finishing her undergraduate degree and become a physician.
