PROVIDENCE, RI, November 28, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Every year, CCK Law offers $1,500 to a military veteran intent on pursuing a legal career. This year, that award goes to Kevin Kim, an Air Force veteran and 1L at Harvard Law School.
Kim's scholarship essay is masterfully crafted and puts his expertise on full display. That said, the craft with which he writes is a double-edged sword. Kim presents readers with a succinct but brutal description of what life is like when it's lived alongside an abuser.
Moreover, his essay reveals the hard truth about how long it can take to break the grip trauma has on survivors. Kim describes his military career as one completed alongside an introspective look at himself as he pushed to grow beyond the philosophies he once learned to keep himself safe.
His essay goes into detail about the steps he took to break the silence that had been ingrained into him as a means to survive. As a young man interested in pursuing a career as a lawyer and leader, he had to relearn how to use his voice.
Kim's determination and creative solution-finding helped him take concrete steps toward a transformative future, but he admits that he didn't take on that fight alone. He highlights sympathetic Koreatown employees, church groups, and military staff members who all gave him opportunities to find his footing.
Today, Kim intends to pursue a career in law because he wants to give back to the community that supported him. In his essay, he says the following:
"Although strong analytical thinking and polished oration lie at the heart of being a good advocate, I believe being a good lawyer means also having a commitment to justice and a compassion for the underserved. I believe the lessons of my childhood will allow me to empathize with those who feel victimized, and the lessons of my uniform will continue to inspire an obligation to speak up for what's right."
CCK Law and its scholarship selection committee have no doubt that Kim will bring a talent for analytical assessment and empathetic representation to the legal field. Most importantly, though, the team admires the journey of growth Kim's taken on over the past several years.
In awarding Kim the CCK 2023 Law School Scholarship for Veterans, CCK Law hopes to make Kim's transition away from military service and into the legal profession a little easier.
