/24-7PressRelease/ - EDMONTON, AB, CANADA, September 23, 2005 ~ Family Productions Inc. is gearing up for this fall's Edmonton Woman's Show, taking place on October 15th and 16th at Northlands AgriCom in Edmonton, Alberta. More than 12,000 people (mostly women) are expected to check out exhibitors' products, entertainment, foods and Authors' Row, featuring author Joyce Harries.
When Joyce Harries (nee Farrell) was born in Edmonton in 1928, milk was delivered by horse-drawn wagons and iceboxes were filled with ice cut from the river. In 1948, Joyce married Hu Harries, who served as the Dean of Business at the University of Alberta, ran an economics consulting business, became a municipal councilor and then a Member of Parliament under Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, operated a vineyard, 3 ranches and numerous business ventures. When Hu died suddenly in 1986, Joyce was left in a precarious financial position.
Joyce sold her own food products, worked as a florist, ran writer's and artist's retreats and then began writing. Her first book, Girdles and Other Harnesses I Have Known was written with the support of a grant from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and published by Lone Pine Publishing when she was 72. In addition to being on the Edmonton Journal and the Calgary Herald bestseller lists, one of the book's selections won a food-writing contest.
Joyce is a member of the Writers' Union of Canada, the Canadian Author's Association and the Writers' Guild of Alberta. She is a past member of the collective editorial board for Other Voices, a literary magazine, and has been a finalist in the Canadian Poet's Association poetry competition. She has written for the cookbook publisher, Company's Coming, and for the food guide, City Palate. Currently Joyce is working on her second book, a sequel to Girdles, called Twice in a Blue Moon.
This year, the Edmonton Woman's Show will see the first Authors' Row, which was organized by Augusta Reinich, assistant producer for the event, and Edmonton mystery author, Cheryl Kaye Tardif. Authors' Row will feature a total of five local area authors, who will be autographing and selling their books, just in time for the Christmas season. Other authors on Authors' Row include Jackson Carter, Joyce Harries, Lorna Schultz Nicholson and Cheryl Kaye Tardif. Writers' resources will be available for aspiring authors at Cheryl Kaye Tardif's booth, including publishing guides from Trafford Publishing and brochures from the WGA and CWC.
