/24-7PressRelease/ - PHOENIX, AZ, December 16, 2005 - There are yoga classes and then there is Dahn Yoga (also known as Dahnhak or Dahn Hak) which has been said to be a life changing experience for many who embrace the eastern training program. It began as an education program more than 5,000 years ago to teach Koreans how to develop both the body and mind, and it was passed from generation to generation. That is, until the traditions stopped and the practice fell into near extinction 2000 years ago until it was rediscovered in 1980 by Dr. Ilchi Lee.
Dr. Lee started teaching Dahnhak to a stroke patient he met in a small park in Anyang, Korea. The results with that one individual were extraordinary and kindled an interest from people who wanted to learn more about this ancient practice. Five years later the first Dahn Center opened in Shinsa, Seoul, Korea and today 600 Dahn centers around the world, including 170 here in the United States.
Dahn Yoga extends beyond simple yoga and tai chi classes. It delves into holistic ways to improve individuals, families, society and ultimately the earth. It is predicated upon changing ones perspective from the individual, the single religion, or separate nation to a global awareness. "Those of us who work in the Dahn Yoga Community truly value its mission which is eventually helping individuals heal themselves and their families. I firmly believe that the way to change the world for the better is in healing the individual and the family. In order to implement this goal, all of the Dahn Yoga Centers and all of our staff work together supporting each other," said Seung Bae Chun, President of the Dahn Center Association. Chun has been practicing Dahn Yoga for 20 years.
As the organization celebrates its 20th anniversary in the United States, it is looking ahead to the future of not only the yoga studio, but to its contributions to the greater community. Dahn plans to launch a new training program called 'Dahn Mu Do' combining Dahn Yoga and Korean traditional Martial Arts. "Furthermore we endeavor to contribute to cultural innovations in the areas of education, health care, and an international peace movement through a worldwide network We hope that healing nature of Dahn and its principles may become a part of everyday life and human society and culture," Chun said.
The history of the organization includes a commitment to showing people 'how to stop seeking enlightenment and start acting it' by pushing past the artificial boundaries of institutions that prevent people from realizing that we are all members of the human society. Internationally, the organization has taken a leadership role in promoting a global awakening that we are all in this world together and that peace is the only course.
As described earlier, there are yoga classes and then there is Dahn Yoga which fosters a deep serenity that goes far beyond a typically exercise program. The growth of the program, especially in the United States, may tie into society's quest to discover a deeper life purpose, along with a healthier, happier peaceful humanity.
