Pardee Homes Honored for Safety Practices

    LOS ANGELES, CA, May 08, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Pardee Homes announces its third straight "best in class" safety designation from California's Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA). Known as VPP, the Voluntary Protection Programs promote effective worksite-based safety and health, and are tied to federal standards. They were formerly known as the Golden State Awards.

The first homebuilding company to receive Cal/OSHA recognition for its safety practices, the multi-regional homebuilder earned its first certification in 2003; certifications are good for three years. With this third consecutive designation, Pardee Homes is thus invited to participate through 2012 in VPP for construction companies.

Pardee Homes President and CEO Mike McGee acknowledged the most recent VPP designation at the company's Los Angeles office, as California OSHA Regional Manager Michael Alvarez presented its VPP certificate to: McGee, Vice President, Corporate and Strategic Services Gino Cesario and Vice President Safety & Vendor Relations John Allen.

"This marks the first time a builder has received the VPP designation for nine years running, and we are proud of its significance," said McGee. "We commend our employees and contractors for furthering the cause of exemplary occupational safety and health, and thank them for an achievement that benefits our industry."

Launched in the 1970s, California's VPP is a labor, management and government cooperative that recognizes health and safety programs that surpass minimal compliance regulations. Acceptance into the VPP indicates that a company and its workforce demonstrate ongoing employee commitment to the company's safety and health program; that they are adhering to their training and education plan; and that their safety program is effective in reducing accidents.

"VPP worksites have a significantly lower risk of serious accidents," said Cesario. "This benefits everyone at that worksite--and it allows the state to focus inspection efforts on higher-risk sites."

Contractor safety is a particular focus for Pardee Homes, added Allen. "Many of our subcontractors work for multiple companies," he said. "Bringing a consistent focus to safety among our subs helps us and the entire industry."
